No less than 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
A minimum of 64 individuals died in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's past.
Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. Over 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations broke out when around 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods near the city's international airport is considered to be the headquarters of a major criminal organizations.
Local authorities stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Many residents were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Locals have likened the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.
Criminal Expansion
The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces stated over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the operation, in addition to multiple guns.
Mission Context
The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies comes after a year-long investigation.
Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.
