RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
